"Finest Dining on the Eastern Seaboard"
9/2/09
Every time we go on vacation anywhere near Delaware, we go the extra mile to go to the Buttery Restaurant. We know that the food and service will always be outstanding. There is always something new to try and love. The crab cakes are better than anywhere I've tried and the rest of the menu offers many other great choices. Recently, I had Tilapia that was cooked perfectly and the key lime pie was to die for. Skip your fancy meal in Philadelphia or Washington DC and head on down to the Buttery. It will be worth the drive.

"Never been Disappointed by the Food"
8/30/09
We love this place and took our visiting family with us when we ate there last week. It is just a great restaurant. The service was a little off, but the food and atmosphere more than made up for it! Try the seafood chowder, buttery blue cheese salad, and whatever the fish of the day is. I had a wonderful tuna steak which I requested rare, and it was top notch! Also, the crab cakes are great!

The outdoor seating is very nice, but call ahead. They also do have a lunch menu. Kids who are used to restaurants are fine here, but there is no kids menu as far as I know. We usually have them order from the appetizer menu.

This restaurant is just a short drive from Ocean City, Maryland and it was certainly worth the drive. Great selection and a delicious meal.

"Best Fare in Town"
8/24/09
I've been dining at the Buttery since it opened in 1994. 15 years later it remains my favorite restaurant by the shore. I would recommend the happy hour fare at the bar, if you are dining alone. The bartenders are friendly, personable and I always meet somebody to chat with. Very friendly environment. Always feel welcome.

"Charming Victorian setting with unique, creative menu offerings"
8/18/09
My husband and I became regular patrons of The Buttery almost from the first time it opened at the rear of the then Devon Hotel on Second Street in Lewes, DE, We were delighted to see the restaurant re-locate to its present site, in a charming Victorian house at the corner of Second Street and Savannah Road. It became a habit of ours that as we approached the Lewes on our drive from Washington, DC, we'd call ahead to reserve our table for two. We always enjoyed our meals there and particular favorites: their signatire seafood chowder. their Buttery salad, and of course, my husband's special delight: hot, crusty, freshly baked French bread. We even took to buying the chowder to take home, as well as some loaves of the French bread; they were that great.

We were always treated politely and courteouslyand felt welcome each time we went there, whether as a couple or with our family. The fact that we returned again and again is an indication that The Buttery contunued to deliver huigh quality service, food and ambiance. In addition, we always found that the staff were very accommodating to special requests we might have from time to time.

It was an easy decision for us to choose The Buttery for our 50th wedding anniversary celebration. The restaurant was closed for our private party, and John Donato, the proprietor, worked with us to create a memorable and most elegant champagne brunch. I have to say it was a spectacular event and a culinary triumph, from the specially-ordered house-made gravlax and other delicacies for our pre-brunch cocktails to the first spoonful of a velvety, delicious lobster bisque and on to the marvelous entree choices given our guests. Most recently, my family and I celebrated a milestone birthday in my life. It was an intimate gathering of my immediate family. Sixteen of us were served in the Garden Room. The vichysoisse was delectable, the best I've ever eaten. Of the 3 choices for a main course, by the looks and comments of all,not one was anything but superb. For dessert, the pastry chef had made two cakes - one a white chocolate mousse cake and the other a southern specialty with roots in Savannah , Georgia - a hummingbird cake. Tall and beautiful in appearance , the cakes just topped the perfection of that afternoon's meal.

The white chocolate mousse cake lived up to expectations. It was wonderful, but the hummingbird cake scored a 10 on all points: flavor, texture, appearance.

By all counts we will go back again and again and again.

"Absolutely wonderful service and the food was incredible as well"
8/1/09

Traveling with all my kids can be a challenge. Currently we have children 25 to 4 so their choices for food is greatly diversified. We knew we were taking a chance taking our 4 year to the Buttery-since its more of a romantic adult restaurant. So we made an early reservation. What a wonderful experience. They made a special dish for our 4 yr old-bow tie pasta with fresh peas in a butter sauce-that was a BIG Hit. We had everything from the seafood stew to lamb to veal to a chicken dish. There was not one thing that wasn't absolutely delicious. I wish I could remember our servers name. He was an absolute pip. Very informed and more than helpful. Don't forget to leave room for desert! Yummy.
